Do You Still Read Classic Books?

Photo Courtesy of Monterey Public Library
Jane Eyre, Les Miserables, Pride and Prejudice, maybe these tittles pop into your mind when you hear the world "classic books." They are indeed literary gems and some of them are even unforgettable. Some people read them because it is mandatory during school years while others read them for fun.

Honestly, schools in my country don't require us to read English classic books. There are however, excerpts from Indonesian classics novels in school text books. Still, we are not "forced" to read it. I read classic because I was curious.

Review : The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini

Tittle       : The Kite Runner
Author    : Khaled Hosseini
Publication date  : April 27th 2004 by Riverhead Trade
Audience  : Adult

The Kite Runner is Khaled Hosseini's debut novel. I actually read A Thousand Splendid Suns (click for review) first, fell in love with his writing and then I decided to read the previous one. The stories are somewhat similar with each other. Both books are set in Afghanistan however, unlike A Thousand Splendid Suns, the main characters of this book are men.

Review : The Virgin Blue by Tracy Chevalier

Tittle      : The Virgin Blue
Author   : Tracy Chevalier
Publication date  : Published June 24th 2003 by Plume
Audience  : Adult

The Virgin Blue is the first historical fiction novel I read. This book also what made me fall in love with that genre. I used to only care about fantasy, but one day I borrowed this novel from my friend and I was amazed. I read the translated version but it didn't matter. Good books are good books, no matter what language it is written.

Review : The Princess Curse by Merrie Haskel

Tittle : The Princess Curse
Author : Merrie Haskel
Publication date : September 6th 2011 by Harper Collins
Audience  : Young adult/Middle grade

I finished reading this book last night and I still giggle whenever I think about it. Yes, this story is so cute and I like it. Some people may say that The Princess Curse reminds them of Twelve Dancing Princess  but I personally cannot say that it is a real retelling because the similarity between the two stories is somewhat minimal.

Review : The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

Tittle       : The Night Circus
Author    : Erin Morgenstern
Publication date : September 13th 2011 by Doubleday
Audience  : Adult

First of all, I was completely wrong about this The Night Circus's genre. I was pretty sure that this is going to be a fantasy or something like that, but nope, it's far for fantasy. Yes, there are some tricks and magic in the story (hey, it's a circus, after all!), but since it's so poetic, I believe literary fiction would be the right category for this book.

Tittle         : Mockingjay (The Hunger Games #3)
Author      : Suzanne Collins
Publication date  : August 24th 2010 by Scholastic Press

I finally finished The Hunger Games trilogy, phew! What a relieve! I kept telling myself that this is going to be a great series so I put my full concentration for it. The story of Katniss, Peeta and Gale are continued. They plan on bringing down the tyrant President Snow and put and end on his tyrant power.

Tittle : As I wake
Author : Elizabeth Scott
Publication date : September 15th 2011 by Dutton Juvenile

I cannot  stress this enough. NOTHING HAPPENED IN THIS BOOK! Seriously, this is thin book, only 269 pages long, this should be a simple story, but still I cannot understand the plot, at all!

Review : The Best of Me by Nicholas Sparks

Tittle   : The Best of Me
Author  : Nicholas Sparks
Publication date : October 11th 2011 by Grand Central Publishing
Audience  : Adult

The Best of Me is the newest book of Nicholas Sparks who is known as a romance master. This is my first time reading book of his as I wasn't really into romance however recently I don't really care about genres because as long as the story is enjoyable, who cares which genre it belongs.
