{"id":1458,"date":"2017-02-06T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-02-06T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aboutskinderm.com\/sunscreen-friend-or-foe\/"},"modified":"2024-04-27T02:10:18","modified_gmt":"2024-04-27T02:10:18","slug":"sunscreen-friend-or-foe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.aboutskinderm.com\/sunscreen-friend-or-foe\/","title":{"rendered":"Sunscreen \u2013 Friend or Foe?"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-center\" data-rt-type=\"image\" data-rt-align=\"center\">\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aboutskinderm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/62fce9a6407dd57a4cab2557_sunscreen-235x300-1.jpeg\" alt=\"Suncreen at AboutSkin Dermatology\" id=\"\" width=\"auto\" height=\"auto\" loading=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p id=\"\">Have you read articles declaring that <strong id=\"\">sunscreen<\/strong> is dangerous?<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">The media has tricked people into questioning the safety and benefits of <a href=\"\/tags\/sunscreen\">sunscreen<\/a> and claim there is \u201cThe sunscreen dilemma\u201d \u2013 it\u2019s not really a dilemma at all.<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">Ultraviolet light is a proven carcinogen. &nbsp;Daily use of zinc or zinc and titanium based <a href=\"\/tags\/sunscreen\">sunscreens <\/a>effectively reduce exposure to the damaging effects of Ultraviolet Light.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"\">What we know from scientific data:<\/h4>\n<ul id=\"\">\n<li id=\"\">UV exposure undoubtedly increases the risk of basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma. These are skin cancers that can occur in cosmetically devastating areas. &nbsp;They often need to be surgically removed. &nbsp;<a href=\"\/tags\/melanoma\">Melanoma <\/a>causes are multi-factorial. &nbsp;UV exposure is included and tanning beds increase the risk of melanoma tremendously. &nbsp;Melanoma can kill.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul id=\"\">\n<li id=\"\">Sunscreen definitively reduces the amount of sun damage to skin cells. &nbsp;DAILY use with reapplication minimizes the effects of photo-aging. &nbsp;These signs include:<a href=\"\/tags\/hyperpigmentation\"> hyperpigmentation<\/a> (sun spots), wrinkling and thinning of the skin, and broken blood vessels. &nbsp;You do not need to be getting burned to be damaging and mutating your DNA. &nbsp;The damage is cumulative.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul id=\"\">\n<li id=\"\">Chemical sunscreens may stimulate estrogen receptors and cause more skin cancer if you are a rat and are force-fed hundreds of times the amount of sunscreen that humans apply to their skin over a lifetime.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul id=\"\">\n<li id=\"\">Physical blockers are better anyway. &nbsp;As single agents they offer a broad spectrum of coverage against both UVA and UVB. &nbsp;They do not absorb into the cells and negate the chemical \u201cfear.\u201d &nbsp;Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide (physical blockers) are also more hypo-allergenic. &nbsp;These are the best sunscreens for both kids and adults!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"\">Take oral <a href=\"http:\/\/www.webmd.com\/vitamins-supplements\/ingredientmono-929-vitamin%20d.aspx?activeingredientid=929\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vitamin D<\/a>. &nbsp;There is no \u201csafe\u201d 10 minutes a day. &nbsp;This is especially true in Colorado living at high altitude and enjoying many sunny days.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Suncreen at AboutSkin DermatologyHave you read articles declaring that sunscreen is dangerous?
